The double-take I did when I saw the news that Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders was Pro Bowl bound would have been a scene-stealer had I been caught on candid camera.
I can’t imagine I was alone in feeling surprised that the Browns rookie quarterback was named as a Pro Bowl replacement on Monday. Nevertheless, the news is real. Surprising, but real:

The stats Shedeur Sanders put up as a rookie are not what you would expect from a quarterback going to the Pro Bowl. Sanders completed 56.6 percent of his passes and threw for 1,400 yards in his eight games. But he threw more interceptions (10) than touchdowns (7) and posted a 68.1 passer rating to go along with an 18.9 rating in ESPN’s QBR metric. Given this collection of numbers, I’m as surprised as you are to see Sanders be named to the Pro Bowl. Did every other viable quarterback say “thanks, but no thanks” to a Pro Bowl invite? Was that spam call I ignored earlier a Pro Bowl invite? I have so many questions.
Kevin Stefanski, then the Browns’ head coach, named Shedeur Sanders the starter for the rest of the season beginning with the team’s matchup with the Bears on Dec. 14. In that game, Sanders completed 18 of 35 passes, threw three interceptions (no touchdowns), was sacked five times, and fiished the day with a season-low 30.3 passer rating. One of those interceptions comes with a good story from Jaylon Johnson, whose football IQ led him to snag a pick when it was thrown his way.
There was a time when Shedeur Sanders was viewed as a potential first-round pick. However, that isn’t how the cookie crumbled. Instead, Sanders lasted until the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Cleveland used the 144th overall pick on the Colorado product, then buried him on the depth chart. But by November, Sanders was appearing in games and trying to play his way into the Browns’ future plans. What the future holds for Sanders is uncertain. After all, Cleveland still doesn’t have a head coach. But I suppose he will always be a Pro Bowler, for whatever that is worth.
