While today’s Denver Nuggets vs Memphis Grizzlies game wasn’t going to be the most discussed game in Denver on Sunday afternoon, it was certainly one that mattered for a number of reasons.
However, due to the massive snowstorm ranging across the entire United States, Nuggets-Grizzlies has been postponed to a later date.
Nuggets-Grizzlies game in Memphis today has been postponed due to weather conditions.

While the actual volume of snow in Memphis doesn’t seem to be the issue (at least from this Coloradan) the freezing cold and ice in a southern environment can make for extremely hazardous traveling and road conditions. Data from AccuWeather shows high humidity, a temperature that feels like 5 degrees Fahrenheit, and both winter storm and extreme cold warnings. That’s unexpected (and very unwelcome) for a southern city like Memphis.
For the Nuggets, a postponed game certainly isn’t the end of the world. There are actually a few positive factors to consider.
The Nuggets were in line to play 17 games during 31 days of January with several back-to-backs and tough days on the schedule. This will be likely be rescheduled to either right after the All-Star break ends or sometime later in the season. The future game will likely feature some sort of back-to-back, but the Nuggets can “kick the can down the road” on that situation when the time comes.
Nikola Jokic and others on the injury report on the verge of returning to play now have an extra day of rest and recovery. With Aaron Gordon suffering a hamstring injury last Friday night, the Nuggets can now offer an extra game to get back on the floor. The Nuggets are also missing Cam Johnson and Christian Braun from the starting lineup while Jamal Murray, Peyton Watson, and Jonas Valanciunas rested during last Friday’s improbable win.
Jokic himself is on the verge of becoming ineligible from award consideration due to the 65-game requirement. Jokic has missed 14 games in a row with a bone bruise and was in line to miss a 15th game today. With the postponement today, Jokic can still miss three games the rest of the season before becoming ineligible in the awards conversation, whether it be MVP or All-NBA honors.
In addition, Spencer Jones is close to exceeding the limits of his two-way contract eligibility. With the trade deadline around the corner, the Nuggets now have some extra wiggle room to play him before he becomes ineligible in early February.
So, while it’s never fun to miss out on Denver Nuggets basketball, fans (and the organization) will surely breathe a small sigh of relief that the team has earned a brief respite from a very difficult point in the 82-game schedule.
Now, it’s onto the Broncos today.
