Tonight it was Olympic multi-medalist Siobhan Haughey who stepped atop the podium in the women’s 200m freestyle, registering a super solid performance of 1:54.96, adding to her ever-growing resume of consistently impressive swims.
Prior to Haughey’s gold, teammate Ian Ho made some noise in the men’s 50m freestyle, where the Virginia Tech swimmer scored silver in a mark of 21.76.
Ho posted one of three sub-22-second swims in the contest, as Korea’s Kim Youngbeom matched the national record in 21.66 for gold and teammate Ji Yu-chan turned in a time of 21.94 for bronze.
Haughey’s and Ho’s medals join the women’s 4x100m free relay surprise silver from day one to bring the nation’s total to 3, with plenty of action yet to unfold in Tokyo. Three years ago in Hangzhou, Hong Kong finished 4th overall, amassing 7 pieces of hardware, including 2 golds, 2 silvers and three bronzes.
