Jensen Acklesfamously played charming demon-hunter, Dean Winchester, throughout the entire 15-season run of the beloved CW show, Supernatural.
Unfortunately for Dean, he died for a final time during the show's series finale, which aired in 2020. During a Q&A session at the Supernatural Convention Las Vegas 2026 on January 18, Ackles referenced that the show's final episode received mixed reviews from fans.
He noted that he "didn't embrace that ending at first" because he didn't want Dean, whom he grew attached to over 15 years, to die.
"That was a big part of my life playing that guy. I don't want to see him die, so that was my initial kind of response," said Ackles to the audience.
He said, however, that once he looked at the overall story of Supernatural, he felt satisfied about its ending. He clarified that "there was never going to be a perfect ending that pleased everybody."
"Somebody was going to complain about whatever we did. I feel like this gave us a real heart-wrenching, heartbreaking, dramatic moment to really kind of tie up the series," said Ackles. "For that from a storytelling perspective, I felt like it was a really good choice. Again, was it the best choice? I don't know that there was a best choice, but I thought this was a really solid [one] and I was really proud of it when we did it. I felt really good about how that whole thing turned out."
He also reminded fans that several beloved Supernatural characters, like Castiel (Misha Collins), Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver), and Charlie Bradbury (Felicia Day), met their end during the show.
"If you step back and look at the show, there were a lot of like really beloved characters that we killed. Because doing that makes good TV. It it makes the audience feel something. It's heartbreaking. It's sad," said Ackles during the fan panel.
Jensen Ackles Explained Why His Opinion About the 'Supernatural' Finale Changed in a 2022 Interview
Ackles explained why his opinion about the Supernatural finale changed in a 2022 interview on actor Michael Rosenbaum's podcast, Inside of You. He said that he wasn't sure about the final episode when it was initially pitched to him andJared Padalecki, who played his on-screen brother, Sam Winchester. According to Ackles, he wanted to "sleep on it" before giving the show's writers and producers his opinion about the ending.
Ackles said he told his wife, actress Danneel Ackles, about his feelings regarding the Supernatural finale.
"She was like, 'Is it because Dean dies?' And I'm like, 'Maybe I'm just too close to that character and I just don't want to see him go,'" recalled Ackles.
Ackles said that his wife recommended contacting the creator of Supernatural, Eric Kripke, who stepped away as the showrunner following season 5.
"He left after season five, so he'd been gone for 10 years but he still knew the show clearly and kept tabs on it. So I called him and and he had not heard what they were planning, and so I told him," said Ackles in the 2022 interview.
He said Kripke later sent him an email with his opinion about the ending.
"He ended up sending me this very incredibly well-written email explaining why he thought this was a great ending. And it just put things in perspective for me," said Ackles.
Ackles clarified that he understood why some fans weren't happy about the show's ending.
"The people that have problems with it are validated. And I think the people that enjoyed it are validated," said Ackles during the podcast interview.
