Professor of Water Resources at Cairo University, Nader Nour-Eddin said that Ethiopia has proposed selling water to Egypt in the future, emphasizing that the UN has not yet approved the sale of river water, as it is a natural resource.
During an interview with the privately-owned satellite channel Sada el-Balad on Friday, Nour-Eddin noted that Egypt’s position from the outset was clear: demanding a minimum water allocation in exchange for allowing Ethiopia to construct whatever projects it desired.
He noted that Ethiopia rejected this arrangement.
The expert further warned of serious repercussions from the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), pointing out that the enormous quantities of silt carried by the Nile pose an existential threat to the dam in the medium term and could render it useless within decades.
The Nile is the primary source of silt that formed the fertile agricultural lands of Egypt, he explained.
He explained that the Nile carries approximately 936 million tons of silt annually, meaning that over time the GERD’s reservoir will gradually fill and could become completely submerged within about 50 years.
Additional dams
Ethiopia is aware of this problem, he added, and is therefore planning to build three additional dams upstream of GERD to trap silt, which will come at the expense of the water share for downstream nations.
He said that these dams, in addition to the GERD’s existing capacity of 74 billion cubic meters, will raise the total storage to approximately 200 billion cubic meters.
Nour-Eddin highlighted that the danger is not limited to storage alone, but extends to evaporation losses, as each of these dam reservoirs loses between two and three billion cubic meters annually, which directly reduces Egypt’s water share.
The expert pointed out that Ethiopia has nine river basins, while Egypt relies on only one river, and it is only fair that this river be left to those who have no alternative.
He noted that the Blue Nile originates from Lake Tana with an inflow of approximately five billion cubic meters, but reaches the Sudanese border with about 50 billion cubic meters thanks to its tributaries, reflecting a significant water abundance in Ethiopia.
