Windows of South Loop high rise shattered during severe storm

Windows of at least one high rise building in Chicago were shattered during severe storms that hammered the region with strong gusts of wind and heavy rainfall on Wednesday.

Multiple windows of a building near the corner of East Roosevelt Road and South Indiana Avenue were broken during the storm, according to NBC Chicago’s Matt Rodrigues, who was at the scene.

A window dozens of stories high could be seen with a gaping hole, video showed.

Chicago police and fire departments both responded to the scene, with authorities shutting down the street and sidewalks below the building to protect people passing by from falling glass. Red police tape could be seen stretching across South Indiana Avenue.

A timelapse video sent to NBC Chicago by viewer Nick Koors showed the severe storm roll into the city’s downtown area.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for virtually the entire Chicago area until 10 p.m.
