By the time 16-year-old Marie Osmond and her 18-year-old brother, Donny Osmond, began the Donny & Marie show in 1976, both were very popular singers. Marie's 1973 cover of the song "Paper Roses" had reached No. 1, while Donny had a number of hits with his siblings in the Osmonds.
As a musical duo, the two continued to perform well on the charts. But it was after Fred Silverman, ABC's president, saw them guest-host The Mike Douglas Show that they were offered their own program.
"He thought we’d be naturals to host our own weekly musical variety show," Donny wrote in his autobiography, Donny Osmond: Life is Just What You Make It. "I will never forget that day.”
Looking back on that day, exactly 50 years ago, Donny revealed some darker thoughts he had, as well. "I remember what I thought. I said, 'There goes my recording career,'" he told PEOPLE. "I thought, career is over, because if people can hear you for free on television every week, why go buy an album?"
Fortunately, that wasn't what people were thinking at all, which Donny learned. "I knew there was power in television, but I didn't know it was going to be this much power," the "Soldier of Love" singer admitted.
While he did have to pause recording new music while he and Marie promoted their variety show, he didn't have to worry about his career ending.
"I remember doing world tours, going to places on this planet I never knew existed, and you walk off the plane, and there are thousands of people screaming your name," Osmond said. "I remember going to Malaysia, and they knew me there. There are places that aired it in South America that I've never been to that just went crazy over the Donny & Marie show."
The show only lasted four years, but he looks back on that period fondly.
"We were thrown into comedy, and that's why I say some of the comedy stuff is kind of silly, because we weren't comedians," he said. "We’re singers, but it's forgivable when you think of the time element, and it's kind of endearing, at least it is for me."
"It’s so fun to look back and say, ‘Oh, I should have done that differently, and that was so stupid,’ but it worked," he added.
