Iconic ’80s Rockers Share First Words After Death of Former Bandmate Who Defined Their Sound

The band Scorpions reacted to the death of their former bassist,Francis Buchholz. On Jan. 23, members from the legendary German hard rock band posted a message to Facebook after Buchholz's death on Jan. 22 at age 71.

“Dear Fans, we have just received the very sad news that our longtime friend and bass player, Francis Buchholz, has passed away," the band wrote. "His legacy with the band will live on forever, and we will always remember the many good times we have shared together.  Our hearts go out to Hella, his family, and friends. R.I.P. Francis."

The message was signed by veteran Scorpions band members, singer Klaus Meine, guitarist Rudolf Schenker, and guitarist Matthias Jabs.

Buchholz was part of the classic lineup of Scorpions from 1973 to 1992. He played on 12 albums with the legendary band and was part of their most successful era that included hits such as ”No One Like You,” “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” “Still Loving You,” “Rhythm of Love,” and “Wind of Change.”

Buchholz played on Michael Schenker’s Temple of Rock album and tour after leaving the Scorpions.

Francis Buchholz Explained Why He Left Scorpions

Buchholz once said he wasn’t surprised by Scorpions' massive success in the United States.

“I knew how strong we were live,” he told Rock Hard in an interview. “In 1979, we signed with Leber & Krebs management and Mercury Records. Early U.S. tours had us opening in big arenas — we never played small clubs there. We became huge, selling out arenas by 1984. Constant radio and TV interviews helped, and our lineup remained the same for over a decade — something American fans appreciate."

The beloved bass player also explained what prompted him to leave the band after more than 18 years.

“For many years, we were a winning team, but about six months before I left, new people were brought in to handle the band’s affairs — people with zero experience in the international music scene,” Buchholz shared. “I felt we needed professionals with real international experience, and I didn’t agree with their intentions. Also, I had a child and twins on the way, so balancing family life with constant touring became very hard. So I chose to step away.”
