Newport Beach native Trinity Rodman is staying with the Washington Spirit.
Rodman entered 2026 without a contract, as her previous deal had expired at the end of last season, leading to speculation of a move to Europe. However, Thursday, the Spirit, at an event hosted at BMO Stadium, announced that Rodman had signed a three-year contract to remain with the club through the 2028 season.
According to ESPN, the contract will see Rodman become the highest-paid player in the NWSL, “at a salary of over $1 million annually.”
“I’m profoundly grateful she has chosen to stay with us another three years,” Washington Spirit owner Michele Kang said. “Despite some very compelling alternatives that she had.
“She’s not just a soccer play, she’s the blueprint. Her power magnifies our game and her mark on soccer, on our game, really stretches well-beyond the white lines.”
Rodman, 23, was the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NWSL Draft, becoming, at the time, the youngest draftee in league history at 18. Rodman attended Corona del Mar and JSerra. She initially enrolled at Washington State, but bypassed college and went into the NWSL Draft.
In her rookie season, she was the league’s Rookie of the Year, a Best XI selection and helped the Spirit win the NWSL championship.
“It feels amazing, I’m very happy, I’m very blessed,” Rodman said. “I think it’s a monumental and game-changing moment right now. I can’t even describe in words what it feels like. Obviously everyone’s going to have their different thoughts and opinions about it, but I’ve never really cared. So that doesn’t change anything for me.”
Rodman is in camp with the USWNT, preparing for Saturday’s friendly at Dignity Health Sports Park against Paraguay and next Tuesday against Chile in Santa Barbara.
“I’ve always had a vision of kind of an idea of what I want my legacy to be and continue to be. For me we’re doing that, with help obviously, and I’m so grateful for that. I think this is just opening up opportunities for American girls with dreams and I’m one and was one of them, and so I’m very grateful about that.”
