Rochester gets $5M grant for ongoing efforts to replace lead service lines

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The City of Rochester has secured a $5 million grant for its ongoing project to replace lead service lines.

It’s part of the $288 million that New York State announced on Thursday for water and sewer infrastructure projects across the state. The state’s Environmental Facilities Corporation Board of Directors approved the state and federal grants.

Also among the recipients is the Town of Groveland, which is getting $3.4 million for the formation of the Groveland Water District No. 1. In addition, Warsaw is getting $12.1 million in grants and interest-free financing to improve the village’s drinking water treatment plant. The plant will get new security features, structural repairs to tanks and basins, replacement of all mechanical and stationary equipment inside the mixing chamber, and more.

Rochester will use its funding, provided through the Environmental Bond Act, to help with cleaning and lining about 28,500 feet of water mains. It will also help with replacing around 770 lead service lines. As News10NBC has covered, Rochester is aiming to replace all lead pipes by 2030. The city ramped up its replacement project in 2018. At that time, nearly half the city’s 60,000 service lines were made from lead.

In December, the city sent letters to residents about steps to minimize their lead exposure. It includes:

Using only cold water for drinking, cooking and preparing baby formula. Hot water dissolves lead more quickly. Flushing your pipes any time water has been unused for more than 4-6 hours. Lead levels are highest when the water has just been sitting in the pipe, so let it run for 3-5 minutes to ensure it’s flushed. Routinely clean faucet screens because they can accumulate lead particles. Use a water filter that is certified to remove lead.
