No. 4 Alabama gymnastics lost 197.275-197.425 to No. 1 Florida on Friday in Gainesville.
“I think it made us better, we’re going to learn from it, we’re going to learn what we have to tweak, and put into practice next week,” head coach Ashley Johnston said.
Rotation 1
As the away team, Alabama started the meet on the uneven bars. At the end of the first rotation, Alabama had scored 49.55 while Florida scored 49.175.
Alabama’s highest score came from junior Chloe LaCoursiere, who posted a 9.975 and took the event title. Freshman Azarya Ra-Akbar landed a 9.95 in her second collegiate appearance, after a 9.975 last week against Clemson.
Rotation 2
The Crimson Tide was on the vault for the second rotation. On the vault, Alabama posted a 49.2 to bring its total score to 98.75. On the uneven bars, Florida posted a 49.55 to bring its total score to 98.725.
The vault rotation only had two scores above 9.825 after the team couldn’t find a groove to stick landings. Senior Gabby Gladieux posted a 9.875 and Ra-Akbar was able to land a 9.925 for the Crimson Tide. Ra-Akbar shared the event title with Florida’s Selena Harris-Miranda.
“We left too much out there tonight,” Johnston said. “I think they’re still learning how to settle the nerves and enjoy competing vault.”
Rotation 3
For the third rotation, Alabama was on the floor. On the floor, the Crimson Tide scored a 49.35 to bring its total score to 148.1. The Gators posted a 49.475 on the balance beam to bring its total to a 148.2.
The Crimson Tide’s highest scorers on the floor were Ra-Akbar and junior Jamison Sears who posted a 9.9. Ra-Akbar and Sears shared the title with Florida’s Amelia Disidore and Taylor Clark.
Rotation 4
Alabama was on the balance beam for the final rotation. On the beam, the Crimson Tide scored 49.175. Florida posted a 49.225 on the floor.
On the balance beam, freshman Jasmine Cawley suffered from a fall in the leadoff position and posted a score of 9.075.
“I think that moment, while it stung a lot, because that win was right in our grasp, I think that moment is going to be the push and the drive that carries us even further,” Johnston said of Cawley’s fall. “I think we have to be grateful for moments like that, they prepare us for cutthroat environments.”
Sophomore Kylee Kvamme posted a 9.925 on the balance beam to mark Alabama’s highest score for the event. The balance-beam title went to Florida’s Harris-Miranda who posted a 9.95.
In Ra-Akbar’s first collegiate appearance in the all-around, she took the title with a score of 39.6.
Next week, Alabama will be in Coleman Coliseum to take on the Missouri Tigers. The meet is set to start Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT, and will be on SEC Network+.
