BRIGHTON, N.Y. — The town of Brighton held its Martin Luther King Jr. Day commemoration on Friday.
Supervisor Bill Moehle presented Barbara De Leeuw with the “Keeper of the Dream” award. De Leeuw, a former teacher in the Brighton School District, was recognized for her ongoing commitment to education, community, and peace.
“It’s a long haul and it won’t be me, it won’t be any of the people that are here to support me, it will be the cumulative work of the people over the course of time, just like Martin Luther King,” said De Leeuw. “We’re standing on his shoulders, it’s not easy work.”
Several local students also spoke about Dr. Martin Luther King during the ceremony. The event included a performance of the song “A Change is Going to Come.”
MLK Day is officially observed Monday, Jan. 19.
