Bears Stadium Buzz: Indiana Begins Legislation Efforts While Illinois Gov. Pritzker Angles to Keep Team In State

As the team prepares to take on the Los Angeles Rams in a NFC Divisional Round matchup at what forecasts figure to be a frigid Soldier Field, the buzz surrounding a new Bears stadium with a fixed roof in suburban Arlington Heights or Northwest Indiana continues to build.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport shared Indiana Senate Bill 27, which was introduced on Thursday. As Rap Sheet notes, the bill estabishes “the funding mechaism” to green light the path to build the future home of Bears football. The folks in the Hoosier State are not wasting any time and politicians in the state are doing what they can to accelerate the process. Additionally, Rapoport shares the team’s statement on Indiana’s new stadium legislation:

“The legislation presented by the State of Indiana is a significant milestone in our discussins around a potential stadium development in Chicago’s Northwest Indiana region. We appreciate the leadership and responsiveness of Governor Braun and Indiana lawmakers in advancing a framework that allows these conversations to move forward productively.”

It is wild sit and think about how we have gotten to the point where the Bears have created a battle between two states for the opportunity to be the home of an iconic NFL franchise. This isn’t something I would have seen coming a year ago. But with the team and the state of Illinois failing to strike a deal, the relocation of Chicago’s football team into an entirely different state is on the table.

What about the Bears stadium project in Arlington Heights?

Before the Bears-Packers playoff game, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was spotted checking out potential Bears stadium sites in Arlington Heights and Northwest Indiana. I’m not sure what the commish’s plans are for this weekend, but I wonder if he will step in at some point to try to play mediator. And while I don’t know what that would look like, I’m open to whatever it takes to getting a deal done. I’ve grown tired of talk without action on all sides.

BEARS-RAMS PREVIEW: TWO CLOSERS, ONE FROZEN STAGE

It should be clearly stated that the franchise still owns the Arlington Heights property that could ultimately be home to new Bears stadium. But because there hasn’t been any legislation passed to move the process forward, the standstill remains. Even as Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker remains open to helping the team when it comes to funding infrastructure projects around the stadium, things on the Illinois side of the border remain stuck in neutral:

Not only is this something the Bears have been wanting from Illinois legislators, but this isn’t a new stance from the Illinois governor.

Pritzker has made this declaration at multiple points since the team began on this journey to find a new stadium home. And on the other side of the coin, the team has made it abundantly clear that they are not asking for money to build the actual Bears stadium project. Perhaps Indiana’s involvement will get Illinois lawmakers and the team back at the table to iron something out. If it happens, then this whole Indiana ordeal will look like a stroke of brillance by team President Kevin Warren. But the longer this drags on, the more annoyed Bears fans will be by this endeavor.
