USA Swimming held their Board of Directors Election this afternoon, and the House of Delegates members elected Tom Dolan, Tom Ugast, and Gunnar Bentz to the Board.
Dolan and Ugast will take over At-Large positions vacated by Katy Aris-Wilson and Kenneth Chung and Bentz will take Maya (DiRado) Andrews’s 10-Year Athlete representative spot.
USA Swimming CEO Kevin Ring said, “The election of these new Board members reflects our ongoing commitment to attracting leaders who are deeply invested in our mission and future success. Their collective experience and passion will help guide USA Swimming as we pursue ambitious goals and continue creating positive impact for our members and communities.”
Tom Dolan is an Olympic gold medalist, winning the 400 IM at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He has previously served as an athlete member on the BOD. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1998 after winning nine NCAA titles and helping the Wolverines win the 1995 team title.
After he retired, he launched the Tom Dolan Swim School and became the President of Corporate Pools for Big Blue Swim School, a national learn to swim corporation.
Tom Ugast is the CEO and President of NCAP, and he emphasized in his bio his plans for the competitive side of swimming stating:
I have always felt we have these 2 goals we must focus on.
Win Medals for Team USA Develop young swimmers at the local level to achieve their goalsNot every swimmer that is a member of USA Swimming will make a National or Junior team, but we must give our Clubs the resources they need to achieve the highest level every swimmer can make.
He also has previous USA Swimming Board experience, and has helped with fiscal oversight and LSC leadership for the organization.
Both At-Large members will serve 4-year terms, which will be up in 2030.
Gunnar Bentz, who will take over the 10-year Athlete Representative role from Maya (DiRado) Andrews, is a two-time Olympian and an Olympic gold medalist as a member of the men’s 4×200 freestyle relay at the 2016 Olympic Games. At the 2020 Olympics, he finished 7th in the 200 fly.
Bentz swam at the University of Georgia, where he finished 3rd in the 200 fly in 2017 and 3rd in the 400 IM in 2015.
He now works in project management and operations for PowertronGlobal, which works in works in the burgeoning industry of data centers.
