Our Chicago Bulls are officially moving on from their Rob Dillingham experiment!
The former No. 8 pick in the lottery out of Kentucky in 2024, Dillingham is now being shipped off to his third team in as many seasons. Shams Charania of ESPN reports that the Bulls are trading the raw, athletic point guard to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for sharpshooting swingman Buddy Hield plus, you guessed it, zero draft picks and cash considerations.
As Charania notes, the Bulls add a better present-day player while helping Charlotte shave off $3 million in salary. Per Spotrac’s Keith Smith, the Hornets will create a $2.7 million traded player exception. Charlotte will now be $25.6 million below the luxury tax. The Bulls, meanwhile, are now over the salary cap heading into 2026-27.
But assuming Hield or another veteran is offloaded before the end of the year, Chicago should still be able to dip back beneath the cap when all is said and done.
Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report notes that Chicago had been in the bidding for young veteran free agents Jonathan Kuminga and Bennedict Mathurin, both of whom would have generally aligned with the timelines of 20-year-old rookie power forward Caleb Wilson and 22-year-old second-year small forward Matas Buzelis. Now, Fischer predicts that All-Star shooting guard Norman Powell and Hield will likely get lots of run to build up their respective trade values ahead of the deadline this season.

Dillingham washed out with the Minnesota Timberwolves, to the point where the team felt compelled to reconstruct its entire point guard rotation this offseason. Dillingham never averaged more than 10.5 minutes during his season-and-a-half with Minnesota. On Billy Donovan’s tanking Bulls for the end of the season, he was given far more runway. His jump shooting and ball control left a lot to be desired. Across 30 Chicago bouts last year, he averaged 9.6 points while slashing .428/.300/.743, 3.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists (against 2.1 turnovers), and 0.9 steals in 21.5 minutes per.
Clearly, with new Bulls executive vice president of basketball operations Bryson Graham now in for ex-president Arturas Karnisovas, Chicago was less inclined to hold onto Dillingham.
Bringing Hield aboard is a bit of a win-now play… for a team that will be winning later.
Hield, 33, ranks as one of the league’s elite sharpshooters. Across the past four seasons, the veteran marksman has been averaging 12.3 points on .439/.391/.834 shooting splits. That 39.1 percent shooting conversion rate from long range arrived on 6.8 triple tries a night. Hield is owed $9.7 million for 2026-27, and holds a $10.1 million player option for 2027-28.
Although he’s pretty well-traveled (this will be his eighth NBA team), Hield should — in theory — have plenty of value both to the Bulls in the short term and on the trade market in the long term. He’s elite at one of the most marketable skills in the game, as one of the best off-ball shooters out there.

As Bobby Marks of ESPN notes, power forward/center Jalen Smith and new All-Star shooting guard Norman Powell are the only other Bulls who connected on 37 percent of at least 3.0 long range tries last year.
Hield should help new Chicago head coach Tiago Splitter at least modernize his offense a bit. Hield joins the Bulls just in time for Media Day, which tips off on Monday. He’ll now join the Bulls’ training camp roster — set to start its preseason prep on Tuesday.
