Rock Star Announces Album Plan With 2010s Band

Jay Buchanan is stepping into 2026 with two big chapters at once: a deeply personal solo debut and a renewed commitment to his long-running rock band, Rival Sons.

The singer confirmed that Rival Sons plan to record a new album after time in the studio later this year, even as he prepares to release his first solo record, Weapons of Beauty, on Feb. 6.

The update surfaced after an Instagram post shared highlights from Buchanan’s recent interview with Eddie Trunk. In the conversation, Buchanan reflected on his long career, recent performances, and what comes next for both his solo work and Rival Sons, a band that rose to prominence in the early 2010s and helped bring classic-style rock back to a new generation.

At the top of the list is new music. Buchanan said Rival Sons will return to the studio to record another album, followed by touring plans that include the U.K., Europe, and select U.S. dates. While no firm release date is locked in, he made it clear that the band’s creative engine is still running strong.

“We’re gonna be getting into the studio and recording another record,” Buchanan said. “And then, of course, we have touring through the summer… I’m looking forward to getting into the studio,  just like regular old operations.”

    Rival Sons 2026 Album Plans

The announcement matters to fans because Rival Sons are not slowing down after more than a decade of steady releases and world tours. Known for albums like Pressure & Time, Great Western Valkyrie, and the Grammy-nominated Feral Roots, the band has built a reputation on chemistry and trust. Buchanan explained that after years of writing songs quickly on the studio floor, the group now prefers a calmer process.

“We take our time,” he said, explaining that the band now writes material ahead of studio sessions while still leaving room for spontaneous ideas once recording begins.

That timeline has shifted slightly due to personal reasons. Buchanan shared that his wife was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, which paused studio plans. He said his priority right now is being home to support her through treatment. The band fully understands the delay, and the album schedule remains flexible.

“I’m gonna take care of my wife and get her through this,” Buchanan said in interview with Steve Harkins of TalkShopLive's Rock 'N' Roll Channel. “This is where I belong right now.”

Despite the pause, the goal of releasing a new Rival Sons album in 2026 is still alive. Buchanan said everything depends on how the next few months unfold, but the intention to regroup and record together remains unchanged.

While Rival Sons' plans are being pieced together, Buchanan’s solo project is already set. Weapons of Beauty arrives Feb. 6 through Sacred Tongue Records via Thirty Tigers. The album marks a quieter, more reflective turn compared to the band’s loud, riff-driven sound.

Buchanan has released singles like “Caroline” and the harder-hitting “True Black,” which he described as “a burner.” The record was written largely in isolation and produced with longtime collaborator Dave Cobb, who has worked on nearly every Rival Sons album.

The solo release does not replace the band. Instead, it shows another side of Buchanan as a songwriter. He has said the timing simply felt right after years of touring and recording with Rival Sons.

“I’ve never experienced anything like what we experienced,” he said. “Everybody was there to support each other and to pay homage.”

Buchanan recalled a backstage atmosphere with no egos, just shared respect, hugs and encouragement. Seeing old friends and heroes, including people he grew up with in California, made the day emotional and unforgettable. As Buchanan prepares for the release of Weapons of Beauty and looks ahead to Rival Sons’ next chapter, one thing is clear: the rock star is not choosing between solo work and his 2010s band.
