Timothée Chalamet’s ‘Marty Supreme’ takes over the internet in wild marketing blitz

The hit film “Marty Supreme,” starring Timothée Chalamet and directed by Josh Safdie, wide released on Christmas Day with critical and commercial success, setting the record for highest opening week box office gross for its distributor, indie film company A24. Inspired by the story of ping-pong champion Marty Reisman, “Marty Supreme” captured the attention of the internet — and, by extension, UA students — with Chalamet’s audacious performance and viral social media marketing. Getting media attention in the internet era has been something of Chalamet’s speciality since he catapulted to stardom with prominent roles in “Dune,” “Little Women” and “Wonka.” Even to those previously immune to his charms, recent changes to his public persona have inspired a re-evaluation of his character. “He was just kind of a pretty boy,” said Abby Smith, a freshman majoring in history and computer science. “Then he was somewhere on TV talking about football, and I was kind of like, ‘You know what? I like that guy.’” In December 2024, Chalamet went on ESPN’s College Football Gameday as a guest picker, correctly predicting an Ohio Bobcats upset of the Miami RedHawks. He has also been outspoken about his love for the English Premier League’s Liverpool FC. “He was talking music … he knows ball,” Smith said. “It made him less like a cocky, random dude in movies, and more like, that guy’s chill. He’s cool.”

Not everything has been positive in the online discourse around Chalamet, particularly after Michael B. Jordan and his performance in Sinners lost to Chalamet at the Golden Globes, where Chalamet took home the Best Actor Award for his portrayal of the titular Marty Mauser.

Diana Rocha, a sophomore studying pre-law at Shelton State Community College, said that the backlash against the Best Actor selection specifically was unwarranted and that both actors deserved praise for great performances in very different films. Chalamet has been putting his goodwill and online popularity to good use, aggressively marketing “Marty Supreme” and its various merchandise: Christmas ornaments, branded boxes of Wheaties cereal and countless clothing items among the offerings.

“‘Marty Supreme’ Christmas Day, ‘Marty Supreme’ Christmas Day,” Chalamet chanted in a bizarre holiday Instagram post. The marketing campaign for the film was also accompanied by a blitz of attention-grabbing stunts, like making Chalamet the first person to ascend the Las Vegas Sphere and launching a bright orange “Marty Supreme” blimp over various American cities.

The film’s guerrilla marketing campaign even extends to the realm of streetwear. Chalamet can be frequently seen sporting a neon orange track jacket emblazoned with “Marty Supreme” in block letters, and his co-star Tyler Okonma, better known by his musical pseudonym Tyler, The Creator, recently released an entire “Marty Supreme” collection of clothing under his fashion brand, Golf Wang. “Losing isn’t even in my consciousness,” Chalamet shouted in a parody “marketing meeting” released to his social media. In the video, he visibly irritates his “marketing team” while proudly revealing the distinctively “hardcore” Marty Supreme orange that he had supposedly designed over the course of six months. That uniquely orange color, embodied in the trademark jacket, has become something of a star in itself on Chalamet’s social media and across the celebrity fashion sphere. Created in collaboration with designer Doni Nahmias and Chalamet’s personal stylist Taylor McNeill, the conspicuous jacket and other colorful variants have found themselves on the likes of Tom Brady, Kid Cudi and Ringo Starr. Beyond the influence of the film itself, the fashion movement kickstarted by Chalamet has only increased his cultural cachet with students at the University.

Not every student has been swayed by the Chalamet hype. Vanessa Alexander, a sophomore majoring in music education, said the famous actor was reminiscent of a rodent.

“While Timothée is probably one of the best actors of our generation, he knows it and that hubris is gonna cause him some issues down the line,” Alexander said. Still, the “Marty Supreme” trend online isn’t looking to die down. Smith said that the “Marty Supreme” orange was a “performative male” version of Charlie XCX’s “brat” green and that she looked forward to seeing the film. “I guess we can all have a ‘Marty Supreme’ winter instead of a ‘brat’ summer,” she said.
