Crystal Gayle is opening up about her health following a knee injury that forced her to cancel a public appearance overseas.
The country music icon, 75, recently revealed via a statement that she suffered a torn meniscus, resulting in her inability to fly out of the country to take part in the 2026 edition of the Your Roots Are Showing conference, which ran from Jan. 14-18 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Gayle was also slated to perform for the FOLK iN FUSION: Nashville to Belfast opening concert on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Waterfront Hall. However, she had to bow out of both events to focus on rest and recovery per the doctor's orders.
“I was truly looking forward to coming to Belfast—singing a few songs, sharing some stories, and spending time with everyone,” Gayle said in a statement provided by her publicist at the time. “But my doctor tells me this knee isn’t ready for those overseas miles just yet.”
“I promise I’ll be ‘Ready for the Times to Get Better’—just not at 30,000 feet next week,” she added. “Thank you for your understanding, and I hope we can make it up to you soon.”
Being Unable to Perform Has Taken a Toll on the Icon
In a brand new interview with People, Gayle spoke candidly, revealing that having to take off due to her injury has been challenging as it has taken both a physical and mental “toll” on her. Per the outlet, if she were to take the risk of traveling such long distances, she would’ve been at risk of “blood clots forming while flying” under her current condition.
“These things happen, and you don't want it to," the “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” singer said, adding, "I've never had anything like this ... mentally, you're going through a 'why me?'”
"I can go and sit and sing,” she assured. “But it does put you in a different place mentally ….It is harder to get around, but hopefully in the near future, it won't be.”
As far as treatment options, Gayle noted, “There are all different types of surgeries they do. So we'll see what I'm going to do.”
“Different doctors have different ideas of how to deal with it,” she added in regard to plans for remedying her medical situation. "I'm sure a lot of people out there have dealt with it and gone their own way and have their own suggestions. But it's really ... I'll be doing things soon.”
