Anti-migrant vigilantes who have been harassing migrants on Calais beaches and slashing the small boats they use to cross the Channel have been banned from entering France.
The activists are linked to flag-raising group Raise the Colours and have been attempting to recruit others to help take direct action to stop migrants and refugees crossing into England.
But on Wednesday, France’s interior ministry said it had banned 10 “far-right” activists belonging to the group from entering or staying in the country.
It said it was aware of members engaging in the “search and destruction of small boats and propaganda activities on the French coast” as well as “targeting the British public, who are being called upon to strengthen the ranks of the movement”.
“Our rule of law is non-negotiable; violent or hate-inciting actions have no place on our territory,” French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez wrote on social media.
The ministry did not name the banned individuals, but it is understood that it includes Daniel Thomas, one of the leaders of the vigilante group and a former bodyguard of far-right activist Tommy Robinson. Thomas describes himself as a “right-wing patriot”.
The i Paper first revealed in November how Britons were filming themselves travelling to beaches in France to “destroy” small boats and sharing the videos online to attract supporters.
The group were later overheard in a pub discussing a new plot to misdirect police and send groups of British men to join their efforts, under the banner of “Operation Overlord” – a reference to the secretive Allies’ invasion of occupied Europe during the Second World War, beginning on D-Day, 1944.

(Photo: Daniel Thomas)At the end of November, the group set up a recruitment site and announced it would be holding a conference on 24 January for up to 500 people, billed as “an opportunity to meet fellow Patriots, discuss upcoming plans & listen to YOUR ideas”.
The meeting, in the West Midlands, was pitched with the message that organisers expected “more than 500 will want to attend, so our plan is to put on another conference shortly afterwards”.
The conference was quietly cancelled last week, and the group’s original social media post advertising it has now been deleted.
A vetting form on the group’s recruitment site asked potential new members: “How do you respond to rules you do not personally agree with?” with three options for a respondent to select: “Follow them and raise concerns appropriately”, “follow them but find them frustrating”, or “challenge or ignore them”.
Another question asked whether a potential recruit would “ignore or cover for them” if a “team member violates protocol”, while a third asked if the recruit would be “willing to follow local laws and organisational rules abroad without exception?” with a yes or no response.
A declaration at the end of the form that required a tick in order to be submitted asked the potential volunteer to follow “all rules, local laws, and organisational protocols”.

In a statement posted on social media, Raise the Colours said the France ban was “absolutely disgraceful” and added: “This man [Nunez] will ban British citizens from France that are trying to stop illegal immigrants crossing the Channel, while at the same time doing absolutely nothing to remove the immigrants who are in the Calais region illegally.”
Thomas shared a separate statement in a video posted to YouTube, in which he described the French authorities as “frog bastards” and said “if you think a little post on X is going to deter us we are now, more than ever, going to do what is necessary to get this done”. He added that the group is exploring challenging the ban legally, adding that “Dover needs to come to a standstill”.
