Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer has heaped praise on the young fast bowler Gurnoor Brar for his impressive performances despite the Men in Blue suffering a crushing four-wicket defeat against England in the second ODI in Cardiff on Thursday, July 16.
The cricket pundit also backed Jasprit Bumrah after his return to form, but he questioned Kuldeep Yadav’s snub in the playing XI as the touring side missed the opportunity to seal the ongoing three-match ODI series in England. Now, the ODI series is set for July 19 at Lord’s. Amid this, Parthiv Patel backs Rohit Sharma to silence critics with century in possible farewell ODI match.
After the second ODI in Cardiff, Wasim Jaffer lauded Gurnoor Brar for his impressive performances on the England tour. The left-arm pacer has taken four wickets in the first two ODIs and has made a strong impression with his disciplined bowling against England.
The 26-year-old has now taken 11 wickets in just five ODI matches for India. His consistent performances have made him one of the brightest young fast bowlers in India. However, Jaffer advised the Indian team management not to rush Gurnoor Brar into T20I cricket.
He believes that Brar is better suited for ODI and Test cricket because these formats allow him to bowl longer spells and stick to his strengths. Jaffer pointed out that Brar's biggest quality is his ability to bowl in the right areas consistently that makes him more effective in Tests and ODIs.
Gurnoor Brar is a good option for Tests and ODIs: Jaffer
Wasim Jaffer said on his YouTube channel, “As for Gurnoor Brar, I think he looks really good. I had said earlier as well that he is a good option for Test cricket and ODIs. In my opinion, he shouldn't be rushed into T20 cricket.
These formats suit him better because he can bowl at his own pace and hit the right lengths consistently. If he plays T20 cricket, I don't think he'll be as effective because batters will go after him. So, I feel Gurnoor Brar should primarily be used in this format and in Test cricket.”
The former Indian opener was also happy to see Jasprit Bumrah returning back to his form again. Playing his first ODI series since the 2023 ODI World Cup, Bumrah has taken two wickets in the first two ODIs against England and has bowled with good pace and control.
Jaffer believes the break after IPL 2026 has helped the star fast bowler recover well. Bumrah had a tough IPL 2026 season with the Mumbai Indians, taking only four wickets in 13 matches.
The cricket pundit added, “I think the break has served him well. We were just talking about how, after the World Cup, he looked very jaded during the IPL. It felt like he was carrying fatigue, and that usual X-factor we associate with Jasprit Bumrah wasn't quite visible. But I think the break he got after the IPL has really helped him. This is the Bumrah we want to see.”
Kuldeep Yadav's exclusion leaves Jaffer surprised
Jaffer was also surprised that Kuldeep has not been selected because India needs a wrist-spinner in the middle overs in England. Earlier, Kris Srikkanth questions Shivam Dube's place in India's ODI squad.
He signed off by saying, “You know, I feel Kuldeep should be playing. Again, it's a bit difficult to understand why he isn't. In the middle overs, you need a wrist-spinner because, on this kind of wicket, a wrist-spinner can provide you with breakthroughs. If you go in with only finger spinners, I think you're likely to face a few problems.”
