Beloved ’60s TV Star Celebrates First Grammy Nom at Age 80

More than six decades after becoming a familiar face in living rooms across America, Kathy Garver is celebrating a career milestone she never expected: her first-ever Grammy nomination.

Best known for playing big sister Cissy Davis on the classic CBSsitcomFamily Affair, Garver earned the nomination in the Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording category for her work narrating Elvis, Rocky and Me: The Carol Connors Story, the memoir of legendary songwriter Carol Connors.

Speaking with KGET in Bakersfield, California, Garver said the recognition has been especially meaningful.

“It’s wonderful that it is up for a Grammy,” she said, noting that the audiobook also features two of Connors’ unreleased songs.

Recording the Grammy-nominated audiobook was a demanding but rewarding process. Garver said it took roughly two and a half weeks, spread across multiple recording sessions, to complete the narration.

The memoir traces Connors’ extraordinary life, from teenage fame singing “To Know Him Is to Love Him” to writing songs for artists like Dionne Warwick and Billy Preston, and co-writing the Oscar-nominated Rocky theme “Gonna Fly Now.” Garver’s narration brings those stories—and Hollywood’s golden eras—vividly to life.

Earlier this week, Garver also appeared at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in support of a new documentary based on Connors’ memoir, sharing photos from the event with fans on Facebook.

While Family Affair remains Garver’s defining on-screen role, she has quietly built an expansive second career as a voice actor. Her work spans decades and genres, with credits including The New Yogi Bear Show, Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, Tom & Jerry Kids Show, and Chuck Norris: Karate Kommandos, as well as video games like Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego.

Garver told KGET that voiceover work wasn’t originally on her radar.

“When my agent suggested voiceover work, I had no idea what that was,” she recalled, laughing as she described her very first audition—a tuna fish commercial.

Although she didn’t land the role, Garver said the experience opened her eyes to new possibilities. Despite having studied speech and theater at UCLA, she had never been trained specifically for voice acting and went on to take classes and develop her own technique.

“The technique is the same thing,” she explained. “You start with reading the script.”

    A New Creative Chapter

In addition to her voiceover work, Garver is continuing to explore storytelling as an author. Her latest book, "Romancing with the Stars," is scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day and focuses on long-lasting relationships in Hollywood.

Co-written with Doug Hartline, the book examines real-life celebrity romances and uses their stories to offer insights and takeaways for readers looking to nurture meaningful connections in their own lives.

Garver said the project grew out of a longtime fascination with what makes relationships endure in an industry known for instability, blending Hollywood anecdotes with practical reflections on love, commitment, and partnership. She also revealed that her most romantic moment was with her husband David Travis, who sadly passed away just a few months ago, when they were on an African safari.

“We looked up, and we saw all these beautiful, twinkling lights. We have a travel guide on how you can recreate this experience now. Safaris are expensive, but if you can’t go on a safari, you can go to the zoo and have a wonderful romantic lunch," said Garver.

The release adds yet another dimension to Garver’s multifaceted career—one that now spans television, voice acting, audiobooks, and authorship, more than six decades after she first found fame.

The 67th Annual Grammy Awards will air Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026, from Crypto Arena in Los Angeles, broadcasting live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
