Jason Arday, the University of Cambridge professor at the centre of a high-profile plagiarism row, has resigned “with immediate effect”.
The University said it had launched an investigation into Arday, a professor of sociology of education, “following new information” about his “academic qualifications and honorary appointments”.
The 41-year-old has admitted errors in his work, but said he had faced “an unrelenting level of public scrutiny and personal attack” and was not a “liar”.
Critics said the affair raised questions about the scrutiny the University applies to applicants in its bid to widen the diversity of its teaching staff.
What are the allegations?
Diagnosed with autism and global developmental delay in his early years, which he says led him to being unable to speak until the age of 11 and unable to read or write until 18, Arday worked as a PE teacher before earning his doctorate at Liverpool John Moores University.
At 37, the sociologist became the youngest ever black professor at Cambridge, focusing his work on neurodivergence and race in education.
Doubts about his work were first raised by another academic, Nathan Cofnas, who said he found numerous instances of plagiarism and questioned some of his stated achievements.
After putting Arday’s work through plagiarism detection software, Cofnas claimed that “many passages are lifted with minimal editing”.
A Daily Telegraph analysis of his PhD thesis suggested more than 180 separate passages were identical or near-identical to another student’s thesis.
And data analysis by The Times claimed some of Arday’s academic research contains “impossible” evidence and is littered with inconsistencies. The newspaper also claimed it included false funding declarations and participant quotes that appear to come from another researcher’s analysis.
An investigation by Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded his PhD in 2015, did not uphold the charges of plagiarism but said they were probably caused by “honest and reasonable error”.
Arday’s response
Arday said that multiple investigations into his work found “there was no plagiarism or academic misconduct”.
Admitting errors in his work, he argued that he had not received adequate supervision during his PhD given his autism and learning disabilities.
Arday also said he absorbs information via mimicry.
He previously told The Times that he was “accountable” for mistakes he has made, but added: “I think the cruelty that I’ve experienced and the positioning of me as this kind of liar and fantasist is totally unacceptable.”

Questions have also been asked about Arday’s claims that he ran 30 marathons in 35 days and 300 miles in three days for charity. Arday said he suffered a hairline fracture in his leg during the challenge.
Experts said this sort of challenge would have placed him among the ranks of elite long-distance athletes. Arday also said he had raised more than £5m for good causes, as well as running 600 miles on a treadmill in six days.
The academic later said the £5m was raised with the help of a syndicate of more than 100 people, over a 20 year period. He could not name these people due to non-disclosure agreements.
The 600 miles challenge was actually completed over a 12 day period to allow for rest days because of the “cumulative wear and tear of training” from previous challenges.
Book publication mystery
Shortly before his resignation, The Telegraph revealed that Arday had repeatedly claimed he was the author of a book called Being Young, Black and Male: Challenging the Dominant Discourse.
It was listed in his biography description in published essays as well as in promotional material for speaking events, and was attributed to the Palgrave Macmillan publishing house. However, The Telegraph reported there is no evidence that any book was published – only that it was a proposal.
TV series ‘impossible’
Arday claimed in a 2022 speech that he was cast in the documentary series Seven Up!, which follows children’s lives across decades, as a child.
But the original Seven Up! was filmed in 1964 when the subjects were born in 1957, whereas Arday was not born until 1985. His supporters say he was referring to a community project chronicling black families, not the TV series.
Prestigious roles questioned
Arday’s biography claims that he held a number of prestigious positions at other universities, including statements that he was a visiting fellow or visiting professor at Ohio State University in the US. Ohio State has denied that he was employed in any role.
Biographies linked to Arday have also claimed he had visiting professorships at Durham, Glasgow, Coventry and London Metropolitan universities as well as Nelson Mandela University in South Africa.
Cambridge investigation
Of his decision to step down from his position at Cambridge and at Jesus College, Arday said: “This decision should not be interpreted as a loss of faith in scholarship or in the values that first brought me to Cambridge.
“Nor should it be mistaken for an acceptance of the narratives that have surrounded me.”
His announcement came after the University said it was investigating him following new information regarding his “academic qualifications and honorary appointments”.
Jesus College said it was launching its own process in relation to the allegation.
Arday’s memoirs, Great and Unfortunate Things, are due to be published later this month, with publishers Simon & Schuster standing by the work.
