David Bowie’s longtime bandmate, Gail Ann Dorsey, marked what would have been his 79thbirthday—and the 10thanniversary of his death. In an emotional Instagram post, the legendary Bowie musician and duet partner reflected on how the world has changed since the music icon died on Jan. 10, 2016.
“Happy Birthday, David Bowie,” Dorsey, 63, wrote on the late musician’s Jan. 8 birthday. “Hard to believe that 10 years have already gone by since you left us in a world that has seemed to turn completely upside down and into total chaos since your passing… But the world remembers you on this day and every day, as I do, and we are eternally thankful for the art and music you have left behind that helps to carry us through the madness and reminds of the power that creativity, vision, courage, humour, intelligence, passion, and music has to conquer even the darkest of adversaries when we nurture these precious qualities within ourselves. God bless you, David. We Love You. ❤️✊??”
Dorsey regularly played bass in Bowie’s band from 1995 until 2004 and was known for performing vocals on his hit “Under Pressure” in concert. Dorsey sang the part Bowie originally recorded with late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury for the hit 1981 song.
In a 2024 interview with Provincetown magazine, Dorsey revealed that she was working in England as a session musician for Tears for Fears when Bowie tracked her down at the studio.
“My initial reaction was to think one of my British friends was playing a trick on me, as I had been living in London for 11 years at that time, but I soon realized it was real, and I just shut up and listened to what he had to say,” she shared. “He wanted me to do a six-week tour for the Outside album that was released in 1995. Obviously, I said yes, and planned to return to my album project after the tour, but ‘the tour,' and other continued projects with Bowie, never ended for pretty much the next 20 years.”
Dorsey added that performing at Bowie’s 50th birthday concert at Madison Square Garden in 1997 was a highlight of her career. “That was a truly magical experience for me, and one that I remember the most. It was like I had died and gone to heaven! A magnificent dream,” she shared.
In honor of Bowie’s birthday and to mark the anniversary of his death, Dorsey will perform a series of tribute shows Jan. 8-11 at The Cutting Room in New York City. The event is titled The Sound and Vision of David Bowie.
In an Instagram post about the shows, she wrote, “I can’t believe we are already approaching 10 years since our beloved Mr. Bowie made his transition, yet the man and the awe-inspiring creations he has left behind are still vibrating so deeply and meaningfully in our hearts, our minds, and our lives.”
Dorsey promised fans a “special evening of music, laughter, tears, and appreciation for the one, the only… David Bowie.”
