WALNUT CREEK — A water main broke Thursday, forcing the closure of lanes in both directions on a busy commute bypass road into Friday and leaving some residents without water, authorities said.

It happened about 2:45 p.m. Thursday.
A small number of EBMUD customers near the intersection were left without water service, police said. They were expected to have it back by 3 a.m. Friday
The leak caused the middle lanes in both directions of Ygnacio Valley Road to be closed. The road connects central Contra Costa County with east Contra Costa County and is a heavily used road by commuters trying to avoid state Highway 4.
Police asked motorists to avoid the area and use alternate routes during the repair work.
