Colorado deserves real spending transparency

Coloradans are told every year that budgets are tight and tradeoffs are unavoidable. What taxpayers are rarely shown is the one thing that would justify that trust: clear, itemized information about where state dollars actually go and what they produce.

Colorado publishes budgets. It does not publish accountability.

Over the last decade, spending has grown, fees have multiplied, and programs have expanded. Yet when citizens ask basic questions, how much is spent on specific programs, what outcomes are expected, and who is responsible when goals are missed, the answers are often difficult to find without filing formal records requests.

This is not a partisan issue. It is a structural one.

Transparency should not require legal expertise or months of back-and-forth with state agencies. Taxpayers should be able to see, in plain language, how funds are allocated, how they are spent, and whether they are delivering results.

That is why I am preparing a statutory ballot initiative focused on real, enforceable spending transparency. The goal is simple: require standardized, program-level spending data to be published in a way ordinary Coloradans can actually understand.

    Not summaries. Not press releases.

Actual numbers tied to actual programs and outcomes.

This is not about attacking government employees or cutting services. It is about restoring a basic accountability loop. When spending is visible, waste becomes harder to hide. When outcomes are measurable, failure has consequences.

Colorado prides itself on innovation and pragmatism. True transparency aligns with both.

Government works best when citizens are treated as owners, not spectators. If we want better results, we need better visibility. And that starts with showing taxpayers where their money goes.
