When the Rebels face Miami in the Fiesta Bowl on Thursday, they will be without 2 offensive assistants.
Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding confirmed on Wednesday that wide receivers coach George McDonald and tight ends coach Joe Cox will not be with the team for the College Football Playoff semifinal game.
“There’s been constant communication. They have another job that is paying them, and they have a responsibility, and at this time, the way the calendar is now, they have 35 guys that are in the portal and they have to build a team,” Golding said, referring to LSU’s situation. “Do they want to be here? You’re damn right they do.”
Golding was asked directly about his staff. He mentioned that several assistants, including offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr., are still with the program. He then used the question as an opportunity to rail against the college football calendar.
Ole Miss has become the case study for how the calendar affects a team and, in many ways, runs antithetical to the sport. The Rebels lost their head coach in the middle of their best-ever season and have had to split their focus while pursuing a national championship.
While Golding was clearly frustrated with the situation — and the constant questions about it — he expressed confidence in the Rebels’ current staff.
“We’ve got plenty of people,” he said.
Ole Miss and Miami kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Hurricanes are a 3.5-point favorite, per BetMGM.
