BREAKING: The Chicago Cubs Are Finalizing a Deal for Edward Cabrera

Holy smokes. The Chicago Cubs are finally landing their controllable starting pitcher in a trade. After months – years? – of rumors, it’s happening.

From Bleacher Nation’s own Michael Cerami:

BREAKING: Cubs are finalizing a deal to acquire SP Edward Cabrera from the Miami Marlins.

We’re still working on the particulars of the trade, but it’ll be out soon.

Cabrera, who turns 28 in April, is under team control via arbitration for 2026, 2027, and 2028, so the addition will not be a significant hit on the budget (MLBTR projected his 2026 salary at $3.7 million). That could prove important in the weeks ahead, as the Cubs consider supplementing their positional group.

Pairing an upper-90s fastball with a mid-90s changeup (not a typo), Cabrera also throws both a curveball and a slider. All of it is nasty, and his command/control improved significantly on that front in 2025. If he can just stay healthy, Cabrera is turning the corner on becoming a true front-two starting pitcher. Maybe even more.

Of note, despite how great his fastball looks, Edward Cabrera has yet to get really great results off it, instead succeeding mostly on his other pitches playing off the fastball. That might be an area where the Cubs have some ideas about how to improve the pitch, and/or how he can focus more on the four-seamer or the sinker.

A look at Cabrera’s 2025 season through the eyes of Statcast:

Nasty pitches and a whole lot of pitch diversity. Not hard to see why a lot of clubs wanted to get their hands on this guy.

For all the upside, there are some obvious risks here, though. The major ones are tied to health, because you’re talking about a pitcher who has topped 100 innings in the big leagues just once (and, even in that season – 2025 – he dealt with multiple injuries). Edward Cabrera has had elbow issues and shoulder issues, and, given his extreme velocity and nasty stuff, you admittedly worry about a future surgery. It’s just a reality of the sport.

Hopefully the medical examination part of this process is extensive.

The other big risk is simply performance-related. For all his incredible projectability, Cabrera hasn’t actually really broken through in a big way in the big leagues just yet. The upside has always been so very obvious when you watched him, but 2025 was the first season he was better than league average in results and peripherals. We tend to think that was things clicking rather than him peaking – he had only just turned 27 – but it’s a risk we have to acknowledge.

The timing here is quite interesting, given the very specific Yankees rumors over the weekend – a deal certainly sounded close – and then it didn’t reach the finish line. Did something scuttle those talks, a la the Cubs and Jesus Luzardo last year? Are the Cubs playing the part of the Phillies this time around?

As for the trade price, I’m sure it’s going to sting. I certainly would hope Cabrera doesn’t cost as much as Shane Baz cost the Orioles, because that would be a monster price to pay. Some big names will be included, though, probably on the positional side. Just the nature of the beast.

    More soon.

If there's ONE thing you need to know about Cabrera, it's that he has the unique ability to throw really fast pitches that drop and run—like a really, really fast changeup.Specifically, he throws those "changeups" at 94-96 mph. Edward Cabrera had his best season to date in 2025. A career-high 26 starts & 137.2 IP.3.53 ERA (3.99 xERA)1.23 WHIP9.81 K/9Control & health have been the main issues for Cabrera. He has decreased his BB/9 from 5.96 to 4.67 to 3.14 from 2023-2025.His Curveball was elite… t.co/EQwra2PvId pic.twitter.com/iaSREOAyu2
