The Chicago Bulls are making a tweak around the periphery of their roster.
According to the club itself, the Bulls have inked free agent point guard Yuki Kawamura to a two-way contract. To open up a slot, the Bulls have waived forward Trentyn Flowers.

— Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) January 6, 2026Yuki Kawamura first arrived on the Bulls’ radar when he joined the team’s Summer League squad. In five Summer League contests for Chicago last July (zero starts), Kawamura averaged 9.6 points on .405/.391/.818 shooting splits, 6.6 assists, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.2 steals across 23.9 minutes per.
For a little guy, he’s also happy to lock down opponents at halfcourt.

— CHGO Bulls (@CHGO_Bulls) July 16, 2025Kawamura initially earned a two-way deal with Chicago heading into the preseason.
During that stint, the 5-foot-8 pro had looked like the kind of undersized, microwave-scoring bench guard that ex-Chicago head coach Tom Thibodeau would have loved to employ back in the day.
After he suffered a right leg injury in training camp, the Bulls cut him. Now, the 24-year-old is apparently healthy. Flowers, who had been brought in initially only after Chicago waived Kawamura in October, was the roster sacrifice needed to make it happen.
Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn ImagesFlowers, 20, had spent his 2024-25 rookie season with the Los Angeles Clippers after going undrafted out of Australia’s NBL. The 6-foot-9 small forward appeared in just two regular-season contests for Chicago this year, averaging 2.0 points on 66.7 percent field goal shooting.
Through three games with Chicago’s NBAGL affiliate in Hoffman Estates, the Windy City Bulls, Flowers had been averaging 8.7 points on .500/.600/.600 shooting splits, 6.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.0 swipes.
It seems like swapping a healthy Kawamura back in for Flowers may have been the plan for a while.
According to K.C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network, Kawamura remained in the Windy City while rehabilitating from the ailment. At a recent game, he told Johnson, “I’ll be back soon.”
What Yuki Kawamura Brings To The Bulls
After spending his first four pro seasons with San-en NeoPhoenix and Yokohama B-Corsairs in his native Japan, Kawamura joined the Memphis Grizzlies on his first two-way deal in 2024-25. As an NBA rookie, he appeared in 22 contests for the 48-34 Grizzlies last season, averaging just 4.2 mop-up minutes per.
Kawamura showed off some exciting upside as a passer and 3-point shooter while with the Memphis Hustle, G League affiliate to the Grizzlies. Across 24 NBAGL regular season bouts last year, Kawamura averaged 12.4 points while slashing .400/.410/.742, plus 7.8 dimes (against 2.5 turnovers). That 41 percent rate from distance arrived on 6.5 triple tries per.
Chicago is at its deepest in the backcourt this season, so it’s unlikely Kawamura will get more than spot minutes unless a lot of guys go down. But he was a fast fan favorite during the preseason this year, and his high-energy, pace-and-space style should fit well within coach Billy Donovan’s system.
