As The Rookie fans gear up for the exciting Season 8 premiere on ABC on Jan. 6, show star Nathan Fillion teased new episodes by disclosing some behind-the-scenes details, including the co-star who took a trip to the hospital while they filmed in Prague, Czech Republic.
Fillion and fellow cast member Jenna Dewan spoke with People about the show, telling the publication about the "incredible time" they had filming abroad, but it wasn't as smooth sailing for their co-star, Bridget Regan, who plays the character Monica Stevens.
"Bridget got food poisoning," said Fillion. "So she spent a little time in the hospital.” Thankfully, she seemed to recover smoothly, and the cast completed filming as planned.
Dewan praised the experience of filming in Prague, noting that she tried to make the most of the solo trip without her kids, saying, "I was — every free moment I had — living. We went to dinners. We did tours. I felt like I finally matured to the point where I wanted to do tours all day long.”
She added, "It just felt so special. It felt like we were in the midst of a film, an action film. It was so cool.”

Regan’s Character Continues To Butt Heads With Fillion’s John Nolan
Regan's character in the show is a clear antagonist to Fillion's Officer John Nolan and the others, although they have to work together on the operation in Prague. Previously, Stevens was on the run from the LAPD, the FBI, and other organizations after a slew of crimes, but she was able to secure her immunity thanks to a deal.
Talking about the tense situation with their characters in Season 8, Fillion told People, "I think it just frustrates Nolan to no end that someone so criminal and so terrible and so smug about it can get away with it. She's not doing hard time.”
Dewan went on, saying of Regan's character, "And she kind of knows it. She plays with it. There's a sense of, ‘You can't get rid of me,’ and, ‘I'm untouchable and now I have an immunity deal, so you can’t do anything about it.’"
"We essentially, in the first episode, are babysitting her," the actress added. "The storyline is we have to go to make sure she does what she's supposed to do and help us here, which of course goes wrong in all lots of different ways.”
Fans will have to tune in to see what happens with Fillion, Dewan and Regan's characters when The Rookie finally returns this week.
