Schools in Shetland, Orkney, the Western Isles, Aberdeenshire and many in Moray are shut on Monday. Some across parts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland are also closed.

Flights have been cancelled and some train lines are also affected due to the cold weather, which saw the lowest temperature in the UK on Sunday recorded at Benson in Oxfordshire, where the mercury fell to -9.3°C.

UK temperatures will remain widely below freezing on Monday due to Arctic air, the Met Office said.

Greg Dewhurst, meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Temperatures on the thermometer really struggling for most of us, only around 2 or 3°C. Some places staying below freezing.”

Highs of around 4 or 5°C are forecast across southwest England. But Mr Dewhurst said “even here with a northerly breeze it will feel sub-zero”.

He added that Monday will be “a very cold day for everyone… extra layers will be needed if you are heading out”.

No services are operating between Machynlleth and Pwllheli, and trains between Cardiff Central and Shrewsbury are also disrupted.

“Due to the low temperatures, some of the ‘points’ (track equipment which move trains between lines) are not functioning correctly. This has caused delays to services since early morning,” National Rail said.

Network Rail Scotland said snow ploughs are running on several routes, including Dundee and Aberdeen, to check it is safe for services to run. No service is expected until the afternoon and disruption is likely to continue into tomorrow.
