SUNRSIE, Fla. — Devon Toews will miss his first game of the season Sunday night in South Florida.
Toews did not participate in warmups ahead of a game at Amerant Bank Arena against the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. A team spokesman said the Avs’ No. 2 defenseman is out with an upper-body injury.
The 31-year-old missed about half of the third period Saturday in Raleigh after crashing into the end boards behind the Colorado net with 13:49 remaining in the third period. He did return for two shifts near the end of that contest.
Carolina’s Nikolaj Ehlers was assessed a tripping penalty on the play, and the Avs converted on the ensuing power play. It was the game-winning goal in a 5-3 win after the Avalache roared back from a 3-1 deficit after two periods.
Toews is one of 14 players on the roster who played in 40 games before this. That is easily the most in the NHL this season, and relative good health is one factor in Colorado’s historic 31-2-7 start.
The Avs became the first team in NHL history to reach the 40-game mark with only two regulation losses after the comeback win against the Hurricanes.
Ilya Solovyov draws in for Toews. He has played nine games for the Avs this season, but this is his first Nov. 1. Colorado had used the same six defensemen for 26 consecutive games. The Avs are 23-1-2 in their past 26 contests.
Samuel Girard moved up to the top pairing next to Cale Makar. The second pairing (Josh Manson and Brent Burns) remained the same, while Solovyov slotted in next to Sam Malinski on the third pair.
Scott Wedgewood is in net for the Avalanche. He will start both ends of the back-to-back after making 25 saves in the win Saturday night.
