Broadway actor Bret Hanna-Shuford has died at 46.
"It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that early this morning we said goodbye to the most amazing man, husband and Papa in the universe," Hanna-Shuford's husband, Stephen Hanna-Shuford, captioned an Instagram post on Saturday, Jan. 3. "Bret Hanna-Shuford left this world peacefully with love surrounded by his family. Our hearts are broken but we will continue to make him proud of us."
Bret was diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis and T-Cell Lymphoma in the summer of 2025, according to the New York Post.
View this post on InstagramOn Christmas Day, Bret shared a picture of himself in a hospital bed with Stephen by his side. Though he looked as though he'd lost a lot of weight, he had a bit smile on his face and appeared to be in good spirits.
"Merry Christmas to all of you," he wrote. "We are so grateful for your love and support! Looking forward to a new year and hope to see you all soon. Sending love!"
Days prior, Bret shared a video update and said that he'd been in the hospital due to a recurring fever.
Bret made his Broadway debut in Beauty and the Beast and later starred in shows like The Little Mermaid and Wicked. He also had a role in Wolf of Wall Street.
A GoFundMe was set up for Bret and his family last year and, so far, more than $320,000 has been donated to help with medical bills and other things like household expenses.
Dozens of family, friends, and fans have left their condolences on the Instagram announcement about Bret's passing.
"Oh my gosh Stephen, I am devastated hearing this I am so so sorry. Sending you and Maverick so much love and courage and strength. You are an extraordinary human and father and husband and Maverick is so lucky to have you with him. Brett will always be with you," wrote former Dancing With the Stars pro Sharna Burgess.
"I am so so sorry to hear this. My heart is with you and your family. I have been praying and hoping for healing for Bret since his diagnosis. I also lost my husband to cancer during the holidays and can relate to the pain you are experiencing. Hoping you find peace and glimmers of him in this dark time," another comment read.
