Houston Officials Address Active Serial Killer Rumors After 3 Bodies Found

A Texas district attorney is doubtful of online rumors suggesting there could be an active serial killer in Houston after three bodies were found in and along the banks of the city’s bayous.

Including the bodies recovered last week, 34 people have been found dead in and near Houston bayous in 2025, according to KPRC-TV. In 2024, the TV station noted there was a similar trend: 35 bodies found in the city’s waterways.

In response to theories circulating on social media, Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare told KPRC-TV “There is not a serial killer that is routinely dumping bodies in the bayou, no.”

Teare said there are no signs of serial killer activity in the city, adding that “there are many reasons for these deaths.”

Houston Police Department public information officer Erika Ramirez told Us Weekly over the phone that two bodies were found on December 22 and a third body was found on Christmas Eve, on Thursday December 24.

On December 22, one body was found in the Buffalo Bayou, Ramirez confirmed. The other body discovered that day was discovered on the rocks near the Brays Bayou.

The third body located on Christmas Eve was found in the Buffalo Bayou, according to police.

Their causes of death remain unclear as of Tuesday, December 31.

Ramirez told Us that these are “all ongoing investigations, pending the autopsy results.”

Prior to December, the bodies of seven people were found near Houston’s bayous within a month, in September and October, according to The Houston Chronicle.

The newspaper, citing a review of medical examiner and police records, reported authorities have found more than 200 people dead by the city’s bayous since 2017. Of the known causes of deaths, most were linked to drownings and violence, according to the newspaper. Other known causes were linked to drugs, alcohol, heart issues and car accidents.

Teare, while speaking with KPRC-TV, also pointed to a variety of reasons for these deaths.

“We have a massive homeless problem. We have massive mental health and addiction problem,” Teare told the TV station. “All of those things are contributing to a lot of the bodies that we’re discovering.”

“Yes, there are times where we recover bodies that were placed in the bayou criminally, no question, but that is not something that is a regular occurrence,” Teare also said.

Houston has 22 bayous and river systems flowing through the city. The Buffalo Bayou, where police said two bodies were discovered last week, spans about 50 miles in length.

Though officials have denied a potential serial killer is behind the deaths, public concern over the possibility followed the recent deaths.

“The math isn’t mathing, I think there’s a serial killer,” Juan Sandoval said while speaking with KTRK-TV during a visit to Houston. “I get Nevada’s ‘for you’ page now, and even in Nevada, they’re talking about Buffalo Bayou, so it’s that bad, it’s reaching another state, across state lines.”

Retired Houston Police Captain Greg Fremin, however, said there is no cause for concern in an interview with the TV station.

“I tell the citizens of Houston, we have a relatively safe city for the most part, but it’s just like any other big city, there is crime, you have to be vigilant, have situational awareness of what’s going on but this is not anything to be concerned about,” Fremin said.
