The Greeley Police Department continued to expand the technology it uses in 2025, adding mobile speed vans and testing a drones-as-first-responders program.
The Real-Time Information Center, which has taken up more permanent residence at Greeley Fire Station 6, while delays have kept it from its forever home east of the Greeley Police Department, launched late last year. Connecting just under 100 traffic cameras, it has allowed technicians to be the first with eyes on scene on more than half the police calls in the center’s first year.
In May, the department added a pair of minivans equipped with technology to automatically monitor and record speeding violations.
No tickets are issued from the vans for drivers going less than 5 mph over. Those caught going between 5 and 10 over receive a warning the first time, and a ticket is issued if they are caught again by one of the vans.
Drivers going less than 25 mph over will face a $40 citation. If the violation occurs in a school or construction zone, the fine doubles to $80.
In September, police got a taste of how the department’s operations could be improved by using drones as first responders. Turk has long talked about the benefits of such technology.

(Jim Rydbom/Staff Photographer)When a call comes in, the drone could respond and a technician can assess what type of response is most appropriate.
“Would it be more efficient and safe to have our drones follow a car that won’t stop for us than initiating a pursuit?” Turk said. “That’s safer policing.”
Though the test period only lasted a week, the department hopes to implement the program on a more permanent basis soon.
