No ban on Bangladeshi players or Mustafizur Rahman in IPL 2026, BCCI to monitor situation

Mustafizur Rahman might be the only Bangladeshi cricketer in IPL 2026, but his team Kolkata Knight Riders are already facing the heat. Social media is abuzz with many fans and even politicians hitting out at KKR for picking up Rahman from the IPL 2026 Auction. The reason is the deteriorating diplomatic situation between the two nations. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) won’t impose a ban on Bangladeshi players. Instead, it has adopted a wait-and-see policy while waiting for any directions from the government of India.

Earlier this year, BCCI postponed Team India’s tour of Bangladesh. It was done following the government of India’s directive, considering the political climate and anti-India stance of the current Bangladesh regime. There have been frequent violent incidents in Bangladesh since the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.

“We have to understand that it is a delicate situation. We have always been in touch with the government on evolving diplomatic situations and haven’t heard anything that would push us to ban players from Bangladesh. So yes, Mustafizur will play in IPL. Bangladesh is not an enemy nation,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

Why are fans against Mustafizur Rahman?

The current political turmoil in Bangladesh has also hit India. Bangladeshi political leaders have frequently raised anti-India slogans while calling for the annexation of Indian territory. Some from the student movement have also fuelled anti-India sentiment in Bangladesh after India gave political asylum to Sheikh Hasina.

Earlier in December, groups protested in front of the Indian embassy in Dhaka white some even trying to attack the premises, following the assassination of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Soon, India closed the visa centre in Dhaka, while Bangladesh also stopped issuing visas to Indian citizens.

Amid the chaos, two Hindu Bangladeshi nationals were lynched to death by violent mobs. That escalated tensions quickly as many in India began demanding the suspension of Bangladeshi players from IPL 2026.

    Future uncertain?

IPL franchises ignored all Bangladeshi players at the IPL 2025 Auction. However, Mustafizur Rahman is the only Bangladeshi player to play in five consecutive IPL seasons. Last season, Rahman came in as a temporary replacement for Delhi Capitals, playing three games after Jake Fraser-McGurk pulled out.

This time, Kolkata Knight Riders shelled out a whopping Rs 9.2 crore for the Bangladeshi pacer after fighting off Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals. Thus, Rahman became the most expensive Bangladeshi player in IPL history.

However, even if the BCCI and the government of India stay clear of the social media demand, Rahman might not be available for all games. Bangladesh are due to play New Zealand in three ODIs and as many T20Is in April. While the current Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has shown flexibility in allowing NOCs to players, if they decide against it, Rahman could end up missing a big chunk of IPL 2026.

Furthermore, the current political climate could also force the BCB to refuse the NOC to Mustafizur Rahman. The player could also pull out.

With many visa centres suspended at the moment, Musatfizur Rahman could find it difficult unless the BCCI pulls its strings.

The BCCI is already in touch with the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on visa issuance for Bangladeshi cricketers in the T20 World Cup 2026 in India. Bangladesh team will play their league matches in Kolkata and Mumbai under heavy security cover. As the IPL 2026 will be played within ten days of the T20 World Cup, Mustafizur Rahman could secure his Indian visa.

“Mustafizur will apply for visa for the T20 World Cup, and will have an extended expiry for the IPL. So, visa won’t be an issue. We have been in touch with the BCB, and we haven’t heard anything regarding not allowing NOC,” the BCCI official told InsideSport.
