The remediation work is a multi-step process, according to the Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission. The ECMC is overseeing the remediation from the April 6 event at a Bishop location operated by Chevron U.S.A.
Chevron is responsible for the clean-up of the well, which is no longer in operation. Earlier this year, Chevron projected clean-up to continue to April 6, 2030 — five years to the day of the blowout. There was a failure of the well barriers and a loss of control over the pressure within the wellbore leading to an uncontrolled flow of fluids including crude oil.
The well is located south of Weld County Road 74. Galeton is an unincorporated community about 22 miles northeast of Greeley.

The agency will vote on potential consequences for Chevron, which could be a fee or penalties.
ECMC spokeswoman Kristin Kemp said remediation is complex and requires Chevron to take samples of water and soil to determine how to fix any damage. The company then remediates the area and tests again.
Testing can go on for multiple seasons in order to adhere to ECMC standards and thresholds.
Galeton residents were evacuated from homes, and Galeton Elementary students and staff were out of their building for a couple of weeks. Chevron said it regrets the inconvenience to homeowners impacted by the evacuations.
