Jaquan Brisker kept it a buck when discussing the Chicago Bears’ Week 17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Jaquan Brisker: "We let the offense down. I'm going to say it. We let the offense down, period. I feel like Caleb and them, they gave us enough points to do what we had to do to win. The defense didn't."
Sure, that loss stung. But in a year where we have seen the head coach and quarterback remind us what accountability and transparency look like, the words above from Bears safety Jaquan Brisker are refreshing. Again, losing stinks. And taking the L despite the offense putting up 38 points on the road is a kick in the knickers. However, identifying what went wrong in a loss and fixing it have been two things this Bears team has done well this year.

This is a group that bounced back from an 0-2 start to win 11 games (with one more left to play) en route to making the playoffs for the first time since 2020 and winning its division for the first time since 2018. I look forward to seeing how this team (especially the guys on defense) bounce back from the Week 17 loss to the 49ers.
This is a big stretch for Jaquan Brisker and the Bears defense
The 2025 season has been full of ups and downs for the Chicago Bears defense. This group ranks 22nd in points allowed and 28th in yards given up to opposing offenses. Neither of those numbers are acceptable, particularly among a fan base that demands execllence from that side of the ball. As far as I’m concerned, it starts in the trenches.
When it comes to rushing the passer, things haven’t been great for the Bears defense. And yet, Montez Sweat (9.5 sacks and 16 quarterback hits to go along with 13 tackles-for-loss) has been putting up solid numbers. Despite playing just nine games this season, second-year defensive end Austin Booker has 4.5 sacks and 12 quarterback hits while playing in a limited snap share. There is talent along the defensive line and elsewhere in the front seven. That this team struggles to generate pressure has left me befuddled.

But with that being said, it hasn’t been all bad for the Bears D, which leads the league in interceptions and creating turnovers. Chicago’s ballhawks have made some big plays while operating in the bend-but-don’t-break scheme. And it has made for some fun watchng on game day.
Safety Kevin Byard III leads the NFL with six interceptions, while cornerback Nahshon Wright (5 INTs) is right behind him. Players such as defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson (2 INTs, 3 sacks, 5 TFLs, 5 QB Hits) and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds (4 INTs, 54 solo tackles, 3 TFL, 9 passes defended) have been stat-sheet stuffers. Linebacker D’Marco Jackson is just one week removed from winning the NFC’s Defensive Player of the Week award. This group has talent. I’m not sure why it hasn’t performed consistently at a high level.
JAQUAN BRISKER VOWED TO BE “BETTER THAN EVER” IN 2025
In the end, this is where someone like Jaquan Brisker can be a difference-maker. We have seen Brisker play quality ball in the secondary. He was solid as a rookie (4 sacks, 73 solo tackles, 5 TFLs) and was on pace for a career-best season in 2024 before a concussion sidetracked his season. Brisker is set to hit free agency after this season ends. So what better time to play your best ball than at a time when everyone will be watching? There is no changing last week’s result. But Brisker and the Bears defense can write their own story in the games that remain on their schedule.
