Kristof Milak on If He Likes Swimming Again: “No Comment”

By Terin Frodyma on SwimSwam

Are there many other swimmers on the planet like Hungary’s Kristof Milak? In short, the answer is no. That is largely due in part to his pure ability to race and produce when it matters, and in part to his relationship with the sport itself.

Following a European Championships that saw Milak swim some of the best races of his already decorated career, including a near-100 fly world record in 49.48, and delivering a heroic 46.29 anchor split for the Hungarian 4×100 free relay to win the European title, even against the sprint giant Egor Kornev on that anchor leg. His success did not end with those two events; he finished 4th in the individual 50 free with a lifetime best of 21.46, and he also earned a bronze medal in the 100 free in 46.87. In short, this was not the old Milak; this is a new version we have never witnessed before.

In an interview with the Hungarian outlet Nemzeti Sport, Milak, who had considered stepping away from competition entirely back in late 2024, was asked whether he liked swimming again after his stellar European Championships outing, to which he responded, “No comment.”

There was some question circulating about what Milak we would see in Paris, especially after his Hungarian teammate Hubert Kos put Milak on blast in an interview with M4Sport, questioning his training and willingness to compete on Hungarian relays.

Milak laid all questions to rest, swimming a full lineup and several Hungarian relays.

When asked about the near-100 fly world record of 49.48, he mentioned that he is hoping to achieve something similar to what he did in the 100 free, likely referring to a big-time drop.

“This is not unrealistic,” Milak said in an interview with Nemzeti Sport. “I would like to achieve something similar to the 100 freestyle in the 100 butterfly.”

Milak was also asked about this being a year of growth ahead of the World Championships and Olympic Games over the next two years, which he defined as going from “zero to somewhere”, adding that he feels that his training is in a good place.

“A year of growth means going from zero to somewhere,” Milak said. “I’m doing very well in terms of training.”

Milak, who displayed a much more sprint-focused approach at Europeans, also explained his advantage in a 100-meter race against some of the top 50-meter sprinters. This advantage was on full display in the outside blitz of a swim in the 100 free final, despite Milak saying that he was not in “that good of shape”.

“Ever since it was announced that all fifty-meter events will be on the Olympic program, more people are preparing for it; it has excited a lot of people, and this is also visible in the strength of the field. Fortunately, not all fifty-meter swimmers can turn well… I can’t really say more than that…” Milak said. “I was happy with the outer lane in the final, I was like, at least I’ll have peace of mind. The last twenty-five meters did sting, but fortunately I just managed to complete the distance. Maybe if I had a little more presence of mind in the last twenty-five meters, I could have come up with an even better time than this – but I’m not in that good of shape.”
