Egypt sends unprecedented message to Ethiopia regarding any new dams

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said on Thursday that the Nile River dispute with Ethiopia is an “existential threat” unlike any other crisis facing Egypt, adding that it transcends national security and border concerns.

In an interview with Egyptian television, Abdelatty said that “The Nile issue is an existential threat. It doesn’t just affect national security or stability; it touches on our very existence. This civilization wouldn’t have existed without water and the ingenuity of the Egyptians.”

He delivered a decisive message to Ethiopia, saying: “Any consideration of new dams will be met with a firm and decisive response in accordance with international law,” RT reported.

Abdelatty stressed that Ethiopia’s “bad faith negotiations, imposition of a fait accompli, and construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam have brought the negotiations to a dead end.

He affirmed that Egypt “will not engage in this charade again.”

Regarding the situation in Somalia, the Egyptian Foreign Minister said that his country will participate in the African Union mission with the support and at the request of the Somali government and the African Union, with its presence being phased in within the mission’s framework.

    Stagnant talks

Abdelatty had previously spoken clearly on Egypt’s position, stressing that “The issue of water security is existential and cannot be compromised or relinquished.”

“Egypt has the full right to use all available means, as guaranteed by international law, to defend itself and its water interests should any harm occur,” he stressed.

Cairo has recently escalated its rhetoric, declaring that negotiations with Ethiopia have reached a “dead end” after nearly 15 years of fruitless talks.

Egypt calls for a legally binding agreement on sharing the Nile’s waters and coordinating the management of the dam, given that the Nile is a shared international river, and in a way that meets the needs of all three countries: Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt.

Ethiopia maintains that the dam falls under its full sovereignty and is located on its territory, and does not consider the Nile a shared river.
