The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced on Thursday the closure of a fraudulent website claiming to sell tickets to the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM).
In a statement, the ministry explained that as soon as the museum’s administration became aware of the website, all necessary legal measures were taken.
The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and other relevant authorities were also notified.
The ministry indicated that this step comes out of its commitment to protecting the rights of visitors to the GEM, ensuring they receive reliable and secure services, and clamping down on any online frauds.
Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy explained that it is vital for internet users to exercise caution when browsing websites and to verify that they are official and authorized before making any reservations or payments online, or submitting personal and confidential data.
Only one official website
The CEO of the GEM, Ahmed Ghoneim, stated that the only official and authorized website for purchasing tickets to the museum is visit-gem.com.
No other websites are authorized or accredited to sell tickets or provide booking services, he stressed.
The GEM administration implored Egyptian and foreign visitors to rely exclusively on the official website for accurate information and secure bookings, and to exercise caution by avoiding any other websites or online platforms claiming to sell museum tickets, as these are unofficial and have no affiliation with the museum.
The museum administration emphasized its ongoing monitoring of the internet to identify any unauthorized websites claiming to be affiliated with the museum and to take legal action against them, such as taking them down.
