Kyle Whittingham reportedly Michigan’s new top target as Kenny Dillingham remains at ASU

Michigan had to shift the focus of its coaching search after Kenny Dillingham agreed to an amended contract with Arizona State to remain in Tempe.

According to multiple reports on Friday, that focus has shifted to Kyle Whittingham after it was announced he’d be stepping down from the top job at Utah with defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley replacing him.

We don’t know exactly how far Dillingham made it in the process, as he said he was never offered the job, but it appears now that Michigan’s lead candidate is a coach Dillingham has spent a lot of time praising and seeking to model his ASU program after.

“Unbelievable run. That’s a guy who does not get enough credit,” Dillingham said on Dec. 13. “That could be the best coach in this generation, definitely top-5, in my mind probably top-3. He doesn’t get enough credit for what he did.”

Whittingham is an ideal fit at Michigan as a seasoned disciplinarian with a track record of physical football with teams that hang their hats on trench dominance.

He also ran a very tight ship in Salt Lake City over 21 full seasons, something that could be refreshing for a Wolverine program characterized by on- and off-the-field scandals this decade.

Utah won double-digit games in eight seasons during his tenure, including four of his last seven.

Whittingham will have the benefit of the limitless resources that can be pulled out of a college football market like Ann Arbor, which could help him find success after the model that worked so well at Utah is so different now in the NCAA landscape.

Dillingham said it’s a “great challenge” to have the same level of success Whittingham had by taking the same paths because of that.

“What (once) was three years ago is completely different,” he said. “What it takes to win, how to navigate winning, the ability to move and shake and the roster rotations … it’s not the same model that it was. But the thought process behind what he accomplished is amazing. To be able to do that in this era would be amazing.”

Once his new deal was taken care of, Dillingham reiterated that whoever lands the Michigan job will have every chance at success.

“Somebody’s going to get an unbelievable opportunity to take over one of the best programs in the country who are resourced as one of the best programs in the country with one of the best rosters in the country.”
