According to multiple reports on Friday, that focus has shifted to Kyle Whittingham after it was announced he’d be stepping down from the top job at Utah with defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley replacing him.

Whittingham is an ideal fit at Michigan as a seasoned disciplinarian with a track record of physical football with teams that hang their hats on trench dominance.
He also ran a very tight ship in Salt Lake City over 21 full seasons, something that could be refreshing for a Wolverine program characterized by on- and off-the-field scandals this decade.
Utah won double-digit games in eight seasons during his tenure, including four of his last seven.
Whittingham will have the benefit of the limitless resources that can be pulled out of a college football market like Ann Arbor, which could help him find success after the model that worked so well at Utah is so different now in the NCAA landscape.
Dillingham said it’s a “great challenge” to have the same level of success Whittingham had by taking the same paths because of that.
“What (once) was three years ago is completely different,” he said. “What it takes to win, how to navigate winning, the ability to move and shake and the roster rotations … it’s not the same model that it was. But the thought process behind what he accomplished is amazing. To be able to do that in this era would be amazing.”
Once his new deal was taken care of, Dillingham reiterated that whoever lands the Michigan job will have every chance at success.
“Somebody’s going to get an unbelievable opportunity to take over one of the best programs in the country who are resourced as one of the best programs in the country with one of the best rosters in the country.”
