Jacksonville State running back Cam Cook announced on Wednesday that he is entering into the NCAA transfer portal. Cook will immediately become one of the most sought-after names on the market.
“This program has shaped me in so many ways and prepared me for the next steps in my journey,” Cook said in a message shared on Instagram. “With that being said, after many deep conversations with the people closest to me, my family, my coaches, and those I trust most, we have decided that it would be best for my future to enter my name into the transfer portal.”
Cook transferred to Jax State from TCU last offseason. In his only season with the Gamecocks, he flourished. The 5-foot-11 running back earned Conference USA MVP and All-America honors after rushing for 1,659 yards and 16 touchdowns while averaging 5.6 yards per carry.
He led the nation in rushing despite missing Jacksonville State’s bowl game. He also led the nation in total yards from scrimmage with 1,945 yards. He had 10 games with at least 100 rushing yards and passed 100 total yards from scrimmage in all 13 games.
Cook will look to become the latest Group of 5 running back to make a successful jump to the power conference level. Last offseason, Ahmad Hardy made the move from UL-Monroe to Mizzou and immediately ran wild. He challenged Cook for the FBS rushing title, and he enters the postseason trailing Cook by 99 rushing yards.
