The Pittsburgh Pirates have landed their second notable bat of the offseason, aiming to improve an offense that otherwise might’ve seriously held back a good young pitching staff.
First it was Brandon Lowe in trade, and now it’s Ryan O’Hearn in free agency:
A splash for the Pirates: Free-agent first baseman Ryan O’Hearn and the Pittsburgh Pirates are in agreement on a two-year, $29 million contract, according to sources familiar with the deal. It includes $500K in performance bonuses in each season.
— Robert Murray (@ByRobertMurray) December 23, 2025Believe it or not, that’s a massive free agent contract for the Pirates, and a clear indication that they see the NL Central as winnable for them in 2026 with the right breaks.
O’Hearn, 32, finally figured things out in his age-29 season after coming to the Orioles (following several stalled years in Kansas City). Since 2023, he’s hit .277/.343/.445/121 wRC+, and he can play competently at first base or in the corner outfield spots. A nice player who gets a nice payday.
He might not be a 3-win player again in 2026, but given the potentially massive voids in productivity the Pirates were facing either in the outfield corners or at DH (Spencer Horwitz is a nice hitter at first base), O’Hearn doesn’t actually have to be a star to be a substantial upgrade.
I’ll be very curious now to see if the Pirates continue to pursue Kazuma Okamoto for third base, or if Ryan O’Hearn was the big bat they wanted and now they’re finished. History tells us it’s the latter, which could be good news for the teams in the third base market (like the Cubs).
