Should the Bulls Build Around Josh Giddey?

On a night the Chicago Bulls desperately needed a statement win, Josh Giddey delivered one with an outstanding triple-double, and in the process, forced a serious conversation about the franchise’s long-term direction and identity.

This piece is inspired by the comments on last night’s postgame article from Chicago’s 127 – 111 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. I told you that I see you and I hear you, and this is my response to that discourse, tackling the question of whether the Chicago Bulls should build around Josh Giddey.

Is Josh Giddey penciled in for the Bulls’ future?

It’s hard not to appreciate what Giddey is doing this season. His importance to the offense has been “Like Mike.” Maybe not at a superstar level, but his name is already sitting next to Michael Jordan’s in the franchise record books. I mentioned some of those numbers last night, but he’s also the fastest Bulls player to reach 1,500+ points, 500+ rebounds, and 500+ assists, and the only Bull with double-digit 20-point triple-doubles since Jordan.

Earlier this year, in September, Giddey was one of the few restricted free agents whose contract negotiations dragged on. Part of that was because no one quite knew how to value the 23-year-old guard. The Bulls ultimately brought him back on a team-friendly deal (four years, $100 million), and he’s playing well above that number relative to league standards. Averaging 20 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists per night, Giddey is flirting with a triple-double every game. The only players with a reputation for doing that consistently are Nikola Jokić, Russell Westbrook, and Oscar Robertson, all former MVPs. He’s not in that conversation yet, but he’s also nowhere near his prime.

If the organization is serious about building around Giddey, roster construction will matter. They can’t keep drafting or acquiring the “best available” talent if it doesn’t complement his style of play. If Chicago commits to him as the centerpiece, they need to surround him with the right archetypes. That said, having a near-guaranteed offense generator with true QB1 tendencies is exactly the kind of foundational piece franchises spend years searching for.

Josh Giddey has been capable of getting Bulls fans excited, whether through his elite court awareness or his ability to hit half-court, buzzer-beating game-winners against LeBron James and Luka Dončić (still not over that by the way). Those moments speak to the intangibles that factor into identifying a franchise player. With his international appeal, Puma shoe deal, and entertaining style of play, marketability becomes both natural and important as well.

Not long ago, the Bulls believed Josh Giddey could be their Tyrese Haliburton. While Haliburton’s aggressiveness and clutch gene still give him the edge, the vision is clear. That’s why the Zion Williamson-to-Chicago rumors floating around the internet are intriguing. The best version of Zion came when he was playing alongside Lonzo Ball. Pairing Zion with a healthier, better version of Zo, now in the form of Giddey, could unlock something special (Zion’s injury concerns aside).

The Bulls are viewed as a realistic potential trade destination for Zion Williamson due to owning over $80 million in expiring contracts. The Pelicans are preparing to move on for good from the failed Zion era for a relatively cheap price due to his unreliable injury history. pic.twitter.com/fCf3C4q7UE

The answer doesn’t need to be rushed. Josh Giddey doesn’t have to be labeled as the franchise player today for his impact to matter. What he’s shown this season is consistency, growth, and an ability to elevate the offense in ways that translate to winning basketball. That alone makes him a valuable piece in Chicago’s long-term plans. Whether the Bulls ultimately build entirely around him or simply grow alongside him, Giddey has earned a seat at the center of the conversation. For now, that’s progress, and something worth paying attention to.
