2025 SWIM ENGLAND NATIONAL WINTER CHAMPIONSHIPS

The final night of action at the 2025 Swim England National Winter Championships saw two British national records bite the dust, both on the men’s side of the house.

We reported how 20-year-old Tyler Melbourne-Smith of Loughborough established a new mark en route to winning the men’s 800m freestyle.

Melbourne-Smith notched a lifetime best of 7:33.56 to become the fastest British man in history. You can read more about his achievement here.

But 22-year-old Ed Mildred of Manchester Performance Centre conducted some damage of his own, taking down the supersuited British record in the men’s 200m butterfly.

Mildred unleashed a lifetime best of 1:50.64 to get to the wall first, beating out the 100m fly victor here, Josh Gammon.

22-year-old Gammon settled for silver just over half a second back in 1:51.17, while backstroke Olympic medalist Luke Greenbank rounded out the podium in 1:55.33.

As for Mildred, his feisty 1:50.64 took down the longstanding British benchmark of 1:51.27 that Joe Robuck put on the books at the 2009 European Championships.

Splitting 25.08/28.33 (53.41)/28.25/28.98, Mildred became the first ever Briton to clear the 1:51 barrier in the event.

Entering this competition, Mildred’s lifetime best in this 2fly sat at the 1:53.01 put up in the semi-finals of the event at the 2023 European Short Course Championships, so he hacked well over 2 seconds off that result to check in with his monster effort tonight.
