2025 SPEEDO WINTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – EAST

The 2025 Winter Juniors East Championships wrapped up earlier tonight, and while there was a lot of fast swimming over all four days, some of the swims didn’t get a lot of attention in the live recaps.

Here are some of the impressive swims you might’ve missed on day four of the meet.

The day started with the 200 backstroke prelims where 14-year-old Ava Burham from Cumberland Valley qualified 17th for the girls’ ‘C’ final, touching in 1:57.07 to drop more than three seconds from her previous best time of 2:00.39 and break 2:00 for the first time.

Due to Audrey Derivaux‘s scratch from the ‘A’ final, Burham was moved into the ‘B’ final, where she ultimately finished 16th in 1:57.87, about eight tenths off her prelims time, but still more than two seconds faster than her preseason best time.

In the boys’ 200 backstroke Owen Sarbak, a 16-year-old from Peninsula Wave Riders, won the ‘B’ final in 1:44.85, coming in three hundredths ahead of Paul Moody. Sarbak dropped almost three seconds from his previous best time of 1;47.40 that he swam just last month. Coming into the season, Sarbak had never been under 1:50 in the event, with his pre-season best sitting at 1:50.76.

In the boys’ 200 breaststroke, Lucas Ackermann swam the 5th time out of prelims, touching in 1:56.85, dropping four seconds from his previous best 2:00.81 to swim under 2:00 for the first time. In the final, he finished 7th in 1:57.56. Ackermann is headed to Texas A&M in the fall.

In the girls’ 200 fly, Ainsley Stephan qualified 20th from the prelims, dropping a second-and-a-half to swim 2:00.59, dropping from the 2:02.09 mark she set last month in November. In the final, she finished 18th, slicing another second-and-a-half to break 2:00 for the first time, swimming 1:59.15. She will be swimming at Wisconsin in the fall.

The finals session started with the 1650 freestyles after an afternoon distance session for the first few heats. Blazing Barracudas 16-year-old Catherine Dorsey finished 10th overall, touching in 16:43.28 after she was seeded with a long course time of 17:17.21. Her lifetime best in the event sat at 17:29.48 from March of 2024, meaning she dropped more than 40 seconds.

The boys’ 1650 freestyle, Club Wolverine 16-year-old Charlie Knoepp swam his 2nd mile ever, coming in with a 1000 seed time of 9:16.11 from last month. He ended up finishing 20th overall in 15:33.32, more than two minutes faster than the 17:41.84 he swam in February of 2023.
