Kyler Gordon is on Injured Reserve (Again)

The Chicago Bears made a handful of roster moves on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s Week 15 showdown against the Cleveland Browns. But no move stood out like the placement of Kyler Gordon on injured reserve. This is Gordon’s second stint on IR this season. The 25-year-old cornerback suffered a groin injury before the Bears’ Week 14 game against the Green Bay Packers, then missed practice due to the injury throughout the week. Based on how Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson spoke about Gordon and his injury issue, this news isn’t a surprise.

And yet, it is disappointing. The Bears believed Kyler Gordon would be a cornerstone of their new-look defense. Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen spoke glowingly about Gordon throughout the offseason. Johnson circled Gordon as a player he looked forward to coaching upon his arrival in Chicago, too. Unfortunately, Gordon has been limited to just three games and 117 total snaps. This has been a lost year for Gordon to this point, but it does not have to end this way. Gordon could return off injured reserve for the playoffs. Of course, the Bears will need to qualify for the postseason in order for that to matter.

What will the Bears do with Kyler Gordon on injured reserve?

Without Kyler Gordon, the Bears will likely deploy C.J. Gardner-Johnson in the nickel cornerback role. I like Chicago’s defense more when it can move CJGJ around like a chess piece. Some nickel corner snaps here, safety snaps there, linebacker snaps on occasion … I could go on. However, Gardner-Johnson sliding into the slot cornerback spot should work just fine down the stretch. Heck, Gardner-Johnson’s arrival during Gordon’s first IR stint helped bridge the gap to this point of the season. The 27-year-old defensive back could cement his status as a fan favorite with a strong finish to this season.

    OTHER BEARS ROSTER MOVES:

Running back Brittain Brown has been elevated from the practice squad. With Travis Homer being ruled out due to an ankle injury, adding backfield depth makes sense. Linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin has also made the move from the prctice squad to the game day roster. Reeves-Maybin signed in November and has ample special teams experience. A second-team All-Pro in 2023, Reeves-Maybin figures to slide into the role that Carl Jones Jr. left vacated when he was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Ravens.
