I-57 closed for hours in downstate Illinois after deadly multi-vehicle crash

A deadly crash involving multiple vehicles amid snowy and slick driving conditions in downstate Illinois prompted a closure of southbound I-57 for several hours Saturday, state police said.

Around 9:50 a.m. Saturday, a deadly multi-vehicle crash on I-57 near milepost 193 in Coles County prompted a full closure of southbound lanes for over six hours, Illinois State Police said. Traffic was re-routed off the interstate at Exit 203, ISP said.

As of 4 p.m. Saturday, ISP said the closure was expected to continue for several hours.

At least nine crashes occurred on I-57 between Mattoon and Tuscola amid the wintry conditions Saturday, IDOT said.

IDOT cameras in the nearby area did not show the crashes, however, they did provide a glimpse at the snow- and ice-covered road conditions on I-57.

Illinois Department of Transportation advised drivers to avoid unnecessary travel Saturday as snowfall accumulated amid wintry conditions that developed in the late morning.

“If you must travel, please take it slow, increase your following distance, and allow extra time to reach your destination,” IDOT said in a post on social media.

Snow was largely expected between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., with most of the accumulation occurring between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Officials warned slick and difficult driving conditions were likely due to the combination of the snow and frigid cold Saturday.

Reduced visibility, snow covered roads and hazardous travel were all expected in downstate Illinois Saturday, with snowfall primarily in the region below I-80, according to the National Weather Service.

“Be careful if traveling today as it may be more difficult to keep roads cleared as treatment can be less effective in very cold temperatures,” NWS warned on social media Saturday.
