ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Local entrepreneurs made their final pitch for a chance to win $1 million at the Luminate startup finals held at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.
Luminate, an accelerator focused on optics, photonics and imaging, hosted the event where other companies also received investments. Leaders said the goal is to keep successful companies in the Rochester area and strengthen the region.
“These companies have been part of the program for 5 or 6 months, and today is the culmination of that. So, the investments we’re going to make into the top teams today will really help them commercialize their technologies, put some roots down in the Rochester region, build their companies, create jobs and contribute to the local economy,” said Jim Senall, president of Nextcorps.
Since Luminate began, it has invested $23 million in 85 startups. Those companies are now worth $725 million.
The event highlighted the growing impact of local startups on the Rochester economy.
