“Joe said, ‘I think Ross has got a song that might, you know, interest you.’ So Ross came over and played the bulk of ‘I Just Wanna Stop,’ and really, I did smell blood in the water, you know. I said, ‘Okay, let’s work on it,'” explained Vannelli.
The track would end up not only being sung by Vannelli, but also produced by his brothers Joe and Ross, with Ross being the primary songwriter. According to the Canadian Songwriter Hall of Fame, the singer’s brothers moved to Los Angeles to record “I Just Want to Stop.”
“When the back vocals were done…everyone realized that it could be a big hit, because it had that vibe to it, that spark to it,” siad Vinnelli.
The soulful love ballad resonated with fans as its lyrics focused on a man reflecting longingly about a past love. “I Just Wanna Stop” wasn’t just a success on the charts, but it also led Vannelli to be nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the Grammys in 1978. He was up against artists like Barry Manilow, Gerry Rafferty, Jackson Browne, and Dan Hill, with the track losing to Manilow’s “Copacabana (At The Copa)”.
While “I Just Wanna Stop” was Vannelli’s biggest hit thanks to his brothers, he wasn’t that enthused to go back to doing singles. He made a career in the ’70s, going from album to album, but couldn’t live with the “capriciousness, the whimsy” of releasing single after single. It wasn’t until 1981 that he released his next single, “Living Inside Myself,” which also received high acclaim.
